(7.30.13) Launching off with the Aeros: 7/23/13 – 7/29/13

The Akron Aeros got some decent pitching over the past week, though a rough performance from the offense sent them on their way to a losing record. The Aeros lost four of their six games, dropping their record to 53-55. Akron is in fourth place in the Western Division, 5.5 games out of first place and five games out of the wild card.

With the big league club in playoff contention and the Akron roster filled with interesting prospects, the makeup of this team could undergo a radical change in the near future. A player like Ronny Rodriguez could intrigue some team, though (as you will see later), he has struggled in recent weeks.

No matter who is on the team, the Aeros will head out on a six-game road trip to New Britain and Altoona starting tonight. They will return to Akron to host New Britain on Tuesday, August 6. Read More…

(7.28.13) Escobar dominates as Aeros fall 2-0

AKRON, OH — Akron Aeros starter Paolo Espino rebounded into form Sunday after struggling mightily in his last two starts.

Unfortunately for Espino and the Aeros, the Richmond Flying Squirrels and Edwin Escobar were even better.

The Aeros (53-55) fell to the Flying Squirrels (50-58) 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Canal Park as they split the four-game homestand with Richmond. Despite the strong pitching from Espino, the Aeros just could not anything going on offense.

Escobar (2-2, 3.00 ERA, 1.66 FIP) has not missed a step after his promotion to Double-A earlier this month. Though this is only his fourth start at this level, manager Edwin Rodriguez came away impressed with the left-hander. Read More…

(7.27.13) IBI Digest: 7/20/13 – 7/27/13

As the calendar approaches August and the trade deadline bears down on us, IBI has ratcheted up its coverage of Cleveland’s trade needs and what the team should do. IBI also continued the normal coverage of the minor leagues, who may or may not factor into trades in the coming days.

(7.26.13) Around The Farm: July 25, 2013

Around the Farm takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game.

Francisco Lindor (SS, Akron): 3-for-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 SO

Well, it took 10 games, but Lindor finally struck out at the Double-A level. He added a double and home run last night after his “failure,” though, as the shortstop pushed his overall line to .441/.578/.647 in those astounding first 10 games. Much like Yasiel Puig, Lindor cannot stay white-hot forever; he will soon start regressing to a more normal set of numbers. How far Lindor regresses, though, is up for debate. After drawing 10 walks and stealing five bases, Lindor is showing a mature approach and has not even come close to being fazed by the promotion. I do not know what to expect from Lindor going forward, but after this past week and a half, nothing would surprise me. Read More…

(7.25.13) Around The Farm: July 24, 2013

Around the Farm takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game.

LeVon Washington (LF, AZL Indians): 4-for-5, 2 R, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 1 E

It is a given that parsing out meaning in Arizona League stats is next to impossible. The Arizona air and the nature of the pitching in the league lead to inflated offense, meaning that just scanning box scores will not tell you all that much about a player. One time I think it is alright to use Arizona League stats as a guide, however, is when someone is at an extreme, as Washington currently is. After Wednesday’s power binge, Washington owns a .531/.595/.969 line with a double, two triples, and three home runs in nine Arizona League games. While the actual numbers themselves are pretty fluky, they are also a sign of a player currently at a level he just does not belong at. While it is understandable that the organization wants him completely healthy before sending him back to Ohio, it is time to promote Washington. There is no reason #WashTime should not be back in full season ball, likely dominating it like he was when he left (.351/.468/.532 line in 22 games at Lake County). Read More…

(7.23.13) Launching off with the Aeros: 7/16/13 – 7/22/13

Before heading out on their road trip last week, Akron Aeros manager Edwin Rodriguez noted the dire position the team’s 47-50 record left it in as the season starts winding down.

“They want to win,” Rodriguez said. “We’re developing here, but it’s always fun to win… It’s a month and a half to go, and yeah, we have to start making some moves from here, start winning some series, instead of getting on a streak, just start winning series.”

The Aeros finished a series win over the Erie SeaWolves in Akron on Wednesday, took three of four in Harrisburg from the Senators, and won the first game of a series with the Bowie Baysox Monday night on their way to a winning week. The winning pushed the Aeros back to .500 and a 51-51 record.

Now just 3.5 games back of first place in the Western Division and 1.5 games out of the wild card, the Aeros will look to win their series in Bowie before coming home to Canal Park Thursday to host the Richmond Flying Squirrels in a four-game set. Read More…

(7.20.13) IBI Digest: 7/14/13 – 7/20/13

The big news of the week was the promotion of top prospect from far-away Carolina to Akron, where many Cleveland fans can make a quick drive to see him live and in person.

IBI was all over the Lindor promotion, covering his transition and his first days in Double-A.

As a side note, I would absolutely recommend making time to go see Lindor play. He really is that talented.

Anyway, here are all of the pieces that went up on IBI over the past week: Read More…
