Around the Farm takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game.
Alex Monsalve (C, Akron): 3-for-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Coming into Wednesday, Monsalve owned a .227/.261/.364 line. After Wednesday, the catcher is up to .308/.333/.538, a quick turnaround only possible due to the fact that Monsalve only has eight games at the Double-A level. After missing most of the season with a sprained UCL suffered on the first day of Spring Training, the most important thing is seeing Monsalve out on the field getting reps. The talent is certainly there — as we saw Wednesday night — but losing all of that time does set Monsalve back at least a little bit. We will not be able to draw much from the small sample size that will be Monsalve’s 2013 numbers, but just being healthy again will put the 21-year-old back on track for 2014. Aeros manager Edwin Rodriguez remarked that this his lack of playing time this year makes this like Monsalve’s Spring Training, so really any positive results are really impressive considering the rest of the league is in midseason form.
