2015 IBI PREVIEW CAPSULES: RHP GAVIN FLOYD (1.19.15)

Welcome to the 2015 IBI preview capsules! In order to prepare for the upcoming season, IBI will have a preview capsule running for every player on the 40-man roster and selected non-roster invites. To mix things up, we will be running these roughly in alphabetical order. Next up is right-handed starter Gavin Floyd.

Gavin Floyd, RHP

Throws: Right — Bats: Right — Entering his age-32 season — Contract: $4.0 million in 2015 (free agent after 2015)

2014 Overview: Coming off of Tommy John surgery, Floyd appeared to be back as an effective major league pitcher in 2014, posting a 2.65 ERA and 3.79 FIP in his first nine starts. But last season did not end well for Floyd, with the right-hander breaking a bone in his surgically-repaired elbow in mid-June. Though the two injuries are not necessarily related, Floyd has only thrown 78.2 major league innings over the last two years and has become, at the very least, a bit of an injury risk. Read More…

2015 IBI PREVIEW CAPSULES: LHP SCOTT DOWNS (1.18.15)

Welcome to the 2015 IBI preview capsules! In order to prepare for the upcoming season, IBI will have a preview capsule running for every player on the 40-man roster and selected non-roster invites. To mix things up, we will be running these roughly in alphabetical order. Next up is left-handed reliever Scott Downs.

Scott Downs, LHP

Throws: Left — Bats: Left — Entering his age-39 season — Contract: Non-roster invite to spring training

2014 Overview: Splitting the season between the Chicago White Sox and the Kansas City Royals, Downs posted a roughly replacement-level season out of the bullpen using his peripherals. Downs’ inflated 4.97 ERA, however, paired with an elevated walk rate likely scared away suitors, leaving the left-hander willing to accept a minor league deal with Cleveland. Assuming his ERA inflation is influenced by some bad luck, Downs could be an interesting depth bullpen arm to keep an eye on in camp. Read More…

Important Note About Links

Hello everyone!

With Indians Baseball Insider moving over to the Scout network, the old IBI links are currently not functional. They should be in time, but for now, the IBI archive is set up in its old Indians Prospect Insider URL.

So in order to view pieces in the “Read More…” links prior to 2015, you need to right click the link, copy the link address, and change the “IndiansBaseballInsider.com” portion of the link to “IndiansProspectInsider.com”

I am in the process of adapting the links on this archive for you, but in the meantime, that workaround will work. Thank you for your patience during this transition!

Jim

2015 IBI PREVIEW CAPSULES: LHP KYLE CROCKETT (1.17.15)

Welcome to the 2015 IBI preview capsules! In order to prepare for the upcoming season, IBI will have a preview capsule running for every player on the 40-man roster and selected non-roster invites. To mix things up, we will be running these roughly in alphabetical order. Next up is left-handed reliever Kyle Crockett.

Previously-run previews can be found here:

Kyle Crockett, LHP

Throws: Left — Bats: Left — Entering his age-23 season — Contract: Pre-arbitration Player (under team control through 2020, on track for arbitration eligibility in 2018)

2014 Overview: After being drafted in the fourth round in 2013, Crockett quickly ascended through the minor leagues and made his major league debut on May 16, making him the first 2013 draft pick to make it all the way to the majors. Crockett also showed he was ready for the call to Cleveland, posting a 1.80 ERA and a 3.23 FIP in 30.0 major league innings. In addition to fellow lefty relievers Marc Rzepczynski and Nick Hagadone, Crockett gives manager Terry Francona a powerful trio of relievers who can shut down left-handed batters. Read More…

2015 IBI PREVIEW CAPSULES: RHP JOSEPH COLON (1.16.15)

Welcome to the 2015 IBI preview capsules! In order to prepare for the upcoming season, IBI will have a preview capsule running for every player on the 40-man roster and selected non-roster invites. To mix things up, we will be running these roughly in alphabetical order. Next up is right-handed starter Joseph Colon.

Previously-run previews can be found here:

Joseph Colon, RHP

Throws: Right — Bats: Right — Entering his age-25 season — Contract: Non-roster invite to spring training

2014 Overview: The 2014 season proved to be a big one for Colon, as the right-hander threw a career-high 138.0 innings, staying mostly healthy, and developed into a true starting pitching prospect for the organization. Though his peripherals leave something to be desired, some of that was by design in order to keep Colon healthy and keep his pitch count down. Most importantly, Colon found success at Double-A, and while he was not added to the 40-man roster in the offseason, he is still on the major league radar. Read More…

AROUND THE FARM: JANUARY 15, 2015 (1.16.15)

Ciriaco’s great night in the Dominican headlines the night on the farm

Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in the Arizona Fall League (AFL) and the Caribbean Leagues. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game.

Here is the rundown of what Cleveland players in winter ball did yesterday:

DOMINICAN WINTER LEAGUE

Audy Ciriaco (3B, Estrellas de Oriente): 2-for-3, 2 R, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SF. Much has been written in ATF about Ciriaco’s offseason from the standpoint that it has been “solid, if unspectacular.” That is not an insult, especially since teams need solid players who can be relied upon to not be black holes in the lineup. But by interspersing performances like this every so often, Ciriaco has been solid this offseason while occasionally flashing great. He is not be banging down the doors to the major leagues, but Ciriaco looks to be hitting decently down in the Dominican and remains an important depth piece for the organization in 2015. Read More…

2015 IBI PREVIEW CAPSULES: UTIL AUDY CIRIACO (1.15.15)

Welcome to the 2015 IBI preview capsules! In order to prepare for the upcoming season, IBI will have a preview capsule running for every player on the 40-man roster and selected non-roster invites. To mix things up, we will be running these roughly in alphabetical order. Next up is utility man Audy Ciriaco.

Previously-run previews can be found here:

Audy Ciriaco, UTIL

Bats: Right — Throws: Right — Entering his age-28 season — Contract: Non-roster invite to spring training

2014 Overview: Though Ciriaco failed to make his major league debut in 2014, the utility man played an important role for the organization last season. Someone with the versatility of Ciriaco really helps to keep the minor league teams going, plus, Ciriaco is probably someone who could handle a week or two in the majors without embarrassing himself. It is not all about the 25-man roster, or even the 40-man roster; teams need depth to make it through a 162-game season, and Ciriaco was a key part of that depth in 2014. Read More…
