Launching Off With The Aeros: 5/22/12 – 5/28/12 (5.29.12)

The Akron Aeros spent the entire last week on the road and it left them yearning for the friendly confines of Canal Park. The Aeros went 2-5 between games in Trenton and Erie, leaving them at a still solid 29-19 for the year. That mark puts them 3 games ahead of the Harrisburg Senators in the Western Division and 1 game ahead of the New Britain Rock Cats for best record in the Eastern League.

Over the next week, the Aeros will stop home for a quick 3-game set against the Bowie Baysox Tuesday through Thursday before headed out to Binghamton for a 4-game set Friday through Monday. Then, the Aeros will start a 6-game homestand on June 5th against the New Britain Rock Cats and the Altoona Curve. Read More…

Launching Off With The Aeros: 5/15/12 – 5/21/12 (5.22.12)

After going 3-5 two weeks ago, the Akron Aeros got back on track over the past week, posting a 5-1 mark to move to 27-14 on the year. Two of those wins – Friday’s and Saturday’s – came with massive offensive breakouts. The Aeros annihilated the Richmond Flying Squirrels by scoring 16 runs on Friday and 15 on Saturday, and then they finished the sweep by winning 3-2 on Monday. They also split two games earlier this week on Tuesday and Wednesday in Erie (a 8-1 win and a 2-1 loss) and took the series opener in Trenton on Monday 5-1.

“There are a lot of good players here. They work hard and they play the game the right way and now they’re getting results from it,” Manager Chris Tremie said of his team’s development on Sunday. “I think it’s what was expected of themselves and they’re proving it.”

The Aeros won’t be home at all this week, as they spend Tuesday through Thursday in Trenton before headed to Erie again Friday through Monday. They will be back in Akron Tuesday, May 29 to host the Bowie Baysox. Akron is currently 5 games up on the Harrisburg Senators in the Western Division and 2 games up on the New Britain Rock Cats for best record in all of the Eastern League. Read More…

Ranking the Cleveland Indians’ Roster at the 40-Game Mark (5.21.12)

Here we are, on May 21st with the Cleveland Indians leading the AL Central at 23-18, 3 games ahead of the Detroit Tigers and 2.5 ahead of the Chicago White Sox. Things have not gone perfectly in Cleveland; the starts of Casey Kotchman, Ubaldo Jimenez, Justin Masterson, and Johnny Damon are testament enough to that. Yet, despite many things not going as planned, the Indians are looking alright a quarter of the way through the season.

The Tribe will need some major improvement in different areas as the season goes forward if they want to remain in 1st place, but for now, let’s rank the players that have gotten them to this point. We’re up to 29 different players on the Indians’ active roster, so the rankings have gotten a little bit longer. If you want to see where players were ranked before the season, click here. Otherwise, let’s get going on ranking the Cleveland Indians’ roster at the 40-game mark. Read More…

Launching Off With The Aeros: 5/8/12 – 5/14/12 (5.15.12)

After all the early season success the Akron Aeros achieved, it was only natural that they would eventually have a down week. The Aeros struggled to a 3-5 record this past week, including losing 5 of their last 6 games. Akron took both games of a doubleheader on Tuesday against the Erie SeaWolves, but the wheels fell off after that. Despite their off week, the Aeros are still 22-13 and remain atop the Western Division of the Eastern League by 2.5 games over the Harrisburg Senators. They also have the best record in all of the Eastern League, edging out the New Britain Rock Cats and Reading Phillies by 0.5 games.

Over the next week, the Aeros will continue a 3-game set in Erie Tuesday and Wednesday before headed home for a 3-game set against the Richmond Flying Squirrels Friday through Sunday. After that, the Aeros will head on the road for a while, visiting Trenton and Erie again. Read More…

How I Met Your Aeros: Thomas Neal (5.14.12)

It’s been an interesting, adventurous year for Akron Aeros outfielder Thomas Neal.

At this point last year, Neal was riding the wave of being named the San Francisco Giants’ 4th best prospect in 2010 according to Baseball America (only behind Buster Posey, Madison Bumgarner, and Zack Wheeler) and their 7th best prospect in the Giants’ system headed into 2011. Neal was described as having a “combination of power, arm strength and surprising ability to cover ground in either outfield corner” and drew comparisons to Jermaine Dye. In their view, Neal had a “chance to establish himself as an everyday player in 2012.”

Fast forward to July 30, 2011. Neal had a respectable .295/.351/.409 slash line in his first experience in AAA, but he had been limited to 60 games and only 2 home runs due to a hand injury. With his prospect stock falling and the Giants in need of infield help, the Indians acquired him in exchange for Orlando Cabrera. After the trade Neal would only manage 10 more games as a shoulder injury he originally had in 2007 flared back up on a throw from the outfield.

Luckily for the Indians and for Neal, things are starting to get better. He acknowledged that injuries have been a problem in the past when I interviewed him before Friday night’s game at Canal Park, but he said that “everything’s good though.” He has been going above and beyond this year to battle his injury problem, thinking way out of the box. Akron comeback falls one-run short (5.13.12)

AKRON – The Akron Aeros fought valiantly Saturday night, but ultimately fell to the Harrisburg Senators 6-5 in a high scoring affair. The two teams combined for 23 hits as the pitching on both sides failed to bring their A-games.

The Senators jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Aeros answered with three in the second. Unfortunately for Akron, the Senators answered with two runs in the third and fourth, making the score 5-3. Akron got one run in the fifth, but Harrisburg’s insurance run in the eighth made the Aeros’ ninth inning rally fall short by one run.

SP Brett Brach was called up from High-A Carolina to start for the Aeros today, but he didn’t celebrate the callup in style. Brach struggled through 3.2 innings, allowing 10 hits, a walk, five earned runs, and only struck out one batter. The Senators did their real damage in the third and fourth innings, scoring two runs in each inning and ultimately knocking Brach out. Read More…

Launching Off With The Aeros: 5/1/12 – 5/7/12 (5.8.12)

Another week, another glut of Akron Aeros’ victories. The Aeros finished taking three games out of four from the Binghamton Mets at home last week before taking two of three at the Bowie Baysox over the weekend. After going 4-2 on the week, the Aeros now come home to play the Erie SeaWolves through Wednesday, then continue their homestand against the Harrisburg Senators Thursday through Sunday.

The Aeros still don’t have the high-profile prospects as Lake County or the many legitimate big league options like Columbus, but the motley crew that assembles in Akron has found a way to be 19-8 on the season and still in 1st place. With players like Jesus Aguilar and Tyler Holt pounding on the door to get called up to Akron, it seems like this team is only going to get better. Even after some Aeros eventually get the call to Columbus (Tim Fedroff, Jared Goedert, etc.), this team figures to be competitive all year. Read More…
