And Jake Lowery?

The Johnny Bench Award — given out annually to the best catcher in college baseball — may not have the longest history, but it does seem to predict some level of professional success. Of the 13 winners of the award, the eight catchers listed above have already made it to the major leagues and Lowery is looking to join them. Read More…

(6.22.13) IBI Digest: 6/15/13 – 6/21/13

After going through some issues, the big league club got back to winning over the past week and climbed back over .500. That, combined with some fun with debuts in the short season leagues made this past week a good time here at IBI.

Note that the Digest is a little short this week as I am leaving for vacation. The Digest will return in two weeks with a mega-edition to catch you up on everything you missed.

Here are all of the pieces that went up on IBI over the past week: Read More…

(6.21.13) Around The Farm: June 20, 2013

Around the Farm takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game.

Note that Carolina was off.

Eric Haase (C, Lake County): 3-for-5, 3 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI

With two more home runs Thursday, Haase continued to show the power that makes him standout as a prospect. He was advertised as having plus power potential and Haase has done nothing to discredit that in 2013, hitting nine home runs and 13 doubles in 54 games with a .225 ISO. Being a 20-year-old in Low-A is not a bad thing — it is normal on the age curve — and Haase is showing the ability to succeed at this level. He will need to continue refining his receiving as he moves up the ladder and probably could use some more balance in his strikeouts and walks (64:14 SO:BB), but that largely does not matter now. What does matter is that Haase is hitting very well and is improving his stock every time he goes out on the field. Read More…

(6.20.13) Turley, Thunder finish sweep, shut out Aeros 1-0

AKRON, OH — Coming into this three-game series with the Trenton Thunder, the Akron Aeros were riding high after going over .500 for the first time since May 12.

Now, as the Thunder leave town, the Aeros have more work to do.

The Thunder (36-35) finished a sweep of the Aeros (34-37) with a 1-0 victory Thursday night at Canal Park. One night after the two teams combined for 25 hits offense was at a premium, with only nine hits falling in all night long.

The key hit of the night came in the seventh inning when Trenton second baseman Jose Pirela launched a double to left field. The double scored the only run of the entire game, bringing in third baseman Reegie Corona from first base. Read More…

(6.20.13) Around The Farm: June 19, 2013

Around the Farm takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game.

Tim Fedroff (CF, Columbus): 3-for-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 SO

After tearing up the minors last year, 2013 represents a disappointment for Fedroff. Even after Wednesday’s strong performance the outfielder only owns a .265/.356/.347 line for the season and is severely lacking in power (.082 ISO). Columbus’ home park is pretty homer-friendly so it is a little surprising to see that this is only Fedroff’s fourth home run after he hit nine at this level in essentially the same amount of games in 2012. Still, it is possible that Fedroff is just slumping. He likely is not as good as he showed last year (.316/.394/.485), though he is also likely better than this. Meeting in the middle (which would be .291/.375/.416, for what its worth) gives Fedroff a profile that may be able to help the big league club, even if it is not overpowering. Fedroff is not a star, but he could certainly be a contributor. Read More…

(6.19.13) Four-run fourth lets Thunder power past Aeros 5-3

AKRON, OH — The Akron Aeros (34-36) squared the ball up well Wednesday night, totaling 13 hits, but the team failed to score enough runs to overcome the Trenton Thunder (35-35), falling 5-3 at Canal Park.

The game featured plenty of offense with Akron and Trenton combining for 25 hits, though both teams failed to actually get many runners across the plate.

The problem, according to Aeros manager Edwin Rodriguez, was his team’s baserunning. Read More…

(6.18.13) Launching off with the Aeros: 6/11/13 – 6/17/13

The Akron Aeros found success despite being away from Canal Park all week, going 3-2 during their road trip to New Hampshire and Portland and moving back to .500 on the season. The team actually made it back above .500 for the first time since May 12 after Saturday’s win, but a loss on Sunday dropped them back down to an even 34-34.

The offense carried the load for the Aeros, posting a collective .339/.403/.585 line with an amazing 22 doubles, four triples, and five home runs in the five games. They also showed good plate discipline with an remarkable 21:19 SO:BB.

The Aeros will look to continue their hot hitting as they return to Canal Park for a six-game series against the Trenton Thunder and New Britain Rock Cats. Tonight’s game starts at 7:05 p.m. Read More…
